Nederlandse instructie en informatie

To gain a better understanding of the health of the Dutch population, it is important to measure physical activity as accurately as possible. That is why GGD Gemeentelijke/gewestelijke gezondheidsdienst (Gemeentelijke/gewestelijke gezondheidsdienst) and RIVM Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu (Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu) are conducting additional research using an activity monitor. With the activity monitor, we can measure sitting, standing, walking, and cycling. This gives us an even better insight of the health of the Dutch population. The results of this study make an important contribution to health policy in the Netherlands.

The activity monitor

How do you wear the activity monitor?

You wear the monitor under your clothes, directly on your skin. The monitor is almost invisible when worn. It is attached to your leg with a transparent plaster. This is a flexible, elastic adhesive that allows you to move freely, just as you normally would.
The above instructional video and the application instructions [link to instructions] explain how to apply the activity monitor.

Instruction

Below we explain how to properly apply the activity tracker. You can also find an instructional video (in Dutch) at www.sportenbewegenincijfers.nl/beweegonderzoek-rivm

Materials needed from the envelope:

  • Activity tracker in protective cover
  • Plasters (Tegaderm)

Step 1. Place the activity tracker and one of the plasters from the envelope on the table. It's best to apply the plaster while sitting.

Stap 2. Remove the green-and-white side of the plaster marked with the number 1.

Stap 3. Place the plaster with the adhesive side facing up on the table.

Stick the activity tracker (inside its protective  cover) onto the center white line of the plaster  with the arrow side aligned.

Stap 4. Position the plaster on the middle of your right   thigh, between the knee and the hip, with the rounded side of the activity tracker facing the hip, so that the sensor makes contact with your thigh.

Then, peel off the plastic covering on the other side of the plaster marked with number 2, by pulling it apart from the middle towards the edges.

Stap 5. Smooth the sticker over with your hand to ensure it adheres well to your skin. It's okay if there is some air trapped under the sticker.

The activity tracker should now be positioned as shown in the image next to these instructions.

What exactly does the activity monitor measure?

The activity monitor only measures your movements. It does this by analyzing the position of your leg. The monitor records whether you are walking, standing, lying down, or sitting. It cannot detect which specific activity or sport you are doing. The monitor also does not record any sound or your location. The activity monitor is not connected to the internet, and your movement data is stored directly on the device itself.

Why was I chosen?

CBS Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek (Centraal Bureau voor de Statistiek) (Statistics Netherlands) randomly selected a group of people from the Personal Records Database (BRP). The BRP contains the addresses and names of all residents of the Netherlands. The addresses of the people we invite are spread across the entire region of GGD Gemeentelijke/gewestelijke gezondheidsdienst (Gemeentelijke/gewestelijke gezondheidsdienst) Haaglanden and GGD Hollands Midden. Not every resident can be included in this study, so your participation is very important: you represent many others in the Netherlands.

Als u heeft aangegeven mee te willen doen aan het Beweegonderzoek, betekent dit dus niet dat u automatisch geselecteerd bent. Als u wel geselecteerd bent, ontvangt u van ons een bevestigingsbrief.

How do I participate?

Soon, you will receive an envelope from RIVM Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu (Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu). This envelope will contain everything you need to participate. You will only receive this envelope if you have indicated that you would like to take part in the Physical Behavior Study.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

If you have been invited to complete the GGD Gemeentelijke/gewestelijke gezondheidsdienst (Gemeentelijke/gewestelijke gezondheidsdienst) Health Monitor 2024, and you are 18 years or older, you will be asked at the end of the questionnaire if you would like to participate in the Physical Behavior Study. We will then draw a sample from those who have indicated they want to participate. If you are selected, you will be invited to wear an activity monitor for one week.

Once we have received the activity monitor back, we will send your reward as soon as possible.

About Privacy:

Your data is handled confidentially. The activity monitor is not connected to the internet. After the monitor is returned, the data is immediately placed on a secure server. The data can only be traced back to you via an encrypted number using a link table that is stored with extra security. RIVM Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu (Rijksinstituut voor Volksgezondheid en Milieu) and the GGD Gemeentelijke/gewestelijke gezondheidsdienst (Gemeentelijke/gewestelijke gezondheidsdienst) organizations do not have access to this information.

About the Activity Monitor: ActivPAL

The activity monitor measures the position of your leg, so the device registers whether someone is sitting, standing, or moving.
The activity monitor does not have GPS, so it does not track your location.
The activity monitor does not record sound.
The activity monitor cannot be connected to other devices (no internet or Bluetooth). Your movement data is stored directly on the device itself.

The activity monitor measures movement with an accelerometer. It does not have other sensors such as GPS, a camera, or a microphone, and it is not connected to the internet (no Wi-Fi or Bluetooth).

About Wearing the Activity Monitor:

For this study, we use the ActivPAL. This is a movement and acceleration monitor. It measures your movements by analyzing the acceleration of your leg and determines at any moment during the measurement week whether you are walking, cycling, standing, sitting, or lying down.

We ask you to attach the monitor to your thigh with a plaster (see manual). These are special medical plasters that are also often used in hospitals.

To ensure the most accurate measurement, it is important to wear the activity monitor throughout the entire measurement period. If absolutely necessary, you can remove the monitor and then reapply it using the provided adhesives.

Yes, absolutely. It is safe to wear the activity monitor. Additionally, gaining insight into the physical activity of everyone (whether you are highly active or not) is very important to us.

This is common and not a problem. Keep an eye on it. If the itching or discomfort worsens, we recommend removing the sticker and reapplying the monitor with a clean, new plaster.

This could be caused by hair or dirt on the thigh. It may help to shave and/or clean the area where the plaster is placed with alcohol or baby wipes. Ensure the skin is completely dry before reapplying the plaster. It is fine to place the monitor on the other leg if needed.

Remove the activity monitor and reapply it with a new plaster. If the irritation persists, you can try placing the monitor on your other leg. If the pain or irritation continues or becomes unbearable, we recommend removing the monitor and washing the area with lukewarm water. Please contact us.

To prevent skin irritation directly under the monitor, you can place a very thin cotton pad between the skin and the monitor. Secure the monitor and cotton pad with a new plaster.
